Talk Show Host: 030: This Morn’ Omina

Here at amodelofcontrol.com I’ve come to appreciate over the years that interviewing bands – I prefer e-mail than to be transcribing Skype interviews, partly as trying to schedule them is very difficult indeed too! – can often tell me (and of course my readers) so much more than just a review. After all, I’m only interpreting what I hear in reviews. Talking to artists themselves gives me far more of an insight, at least in some cases, into their thoughts and processes when it comes to producing music. Countdown: 2014: Gigs

This year: 170 bands, 57 days-worth of gigs. Five festivals, three countries, eight cities/towns. From venues holding thousands to those holding tens. Due to personal issues and, frankly, being too damned busy for much of the year, I didn’t get to write about many of them aside from the festivals, so writing this list has really taxed the powers of my memory. Memory of a Festival: 020: Resistanz 2014

As I write this, the first of those weekends is done, and I’ve been left shattered and more than a bit croaky, with two days of work to face before I can head off to the North Yorkshire coast on Thursday. The perils of having a limited leave allowance from work… Read more “Memory of a Festival: 020: Resistanz 2014”

Countdown: 2011: Albums

During 2011 I bought an awful lot of albums. at least 75, in fact. And so many that some that might have made it in a normal year ended up being missed off this list. So there may well be a “what I overlooked” post at the end of the year, just to ensure that everything I wanted to mention at some point gets included somehow. Still, I’d rather have this problem than have too little to write about… Next week: Gigs of the year. Read more “Countdown: 2011: Albums”

Countdown: 2011: Tracks

This is the eighth year that I’ve done a rundown of the music released in the past year – and every year I seem to end up with more material to cover. Read more “Countdown: 2011: Tracks”

But Listen: 115: This Morn’ Omina – L’Unification Des Forces Opposantes

Mika Goedrijk’s This Morn’ Omina have been plugging something of a lonely trail for many years now – fifteen, in fact. And with them now being long-time members of the Ant-Zen roster, it has to be said that even there they stand out. While many acts on the label are often harsh, noisy acts – but with a unifying theme of being forward-looking and experimental, creating their own trends rather than slavishly following others – This Morn’ Omina have continued with their unusual, heavily-tribal influenced industrial dance music.
