The election of Donald Trump on what was, basically, an anti-immigrant/minority ticket has already begun to have a major impact on the lives of visitors and residents of the US, while it is becoming ever clearer that the “Brexit” vote to leave the EU in the UK was also around little more than immigration concerns (as just about everything else promised was either debunked or plain lies), with PM Theresa May apparently happy to risk an entire economy just to get the immigration restrictions she wants. Two reunions of different kinds hit the news last week, although interestingly the return of Steps seemed to be rather overshadowed by The Stone Roses. The NME in particular are treating the latter like the, er, Resurrection, the most important music news, well, ever. Which in some respects kinda shows them for what they and most of the music industry are about nowadays – obsessed by nostalgia and perhaps no longer all that interested in new music – which, as the papers full title suggests, should really be their focus. A slightly more light-hearted TT this week, one that’s been in the works since the recent Christmas number one, and hearing nothing but cowbell, it seems, in much of the Winter Olympics coverage in the past week or so, made this appropriate. I’ve held this over from last week, which perhaps would have been a better time for it…but never mind. Songs about politics and all relating to it are an age old idea, but still even after all these years one with legs. And after a quick scan of my collection suggested loads and loads for this, I quickly was able to narrow the selection a little, down to songs about politics and America – which still left me with many options!
