Best of 2016: Albums

Part three of the round-up of 2016 comes to you from the final week of our honeymoon (from the warm sunshine of the Dominican Republic). Sorry, not sorry. Read more “Best of 2016: Albums”

Tuesday Ten: 248: Tracks of the Month (January 2016)

After as usual a month or two off from this – new releases are thin on the ground at the end of the year anyway, and the end-of-year lists (start here if you missed them) take up a lot of time – it’s time to get back to telling you, the reader, about some of the good new music out there.

Tuesday Ten: 178: The Bucket List

During my recent Depeche Mode live review, I noted that they were one of those bands that I’d been waiting a long, long time to see, and indeed, over the past few years, I’ve made considerable inroads into a long list of similar bands. Particular shows of note included Laibach at the Tate Modern last year, Kraftwerk in Düsseldorf in January, Faith No More at Hammersmith last July, Refused at the Forum last August, The Afghan Whigs at KOKO in August, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor at the Forum in November. And that was only the best of them. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 178: The Bucket List”

Tuesday Ten: 120: Literature

The wierd thing about writing these Tuesday Tens is that the ideas for some take a long time to come together. Others can have a whole load of suggestions come at once, particularly if an idea for a subject pops up while I’m in the pub, or out with my girlfriend (especially in the car, oddly enough), when a song triggers it. This happened on Friday night in the Dev, when Daisy and another friend came up with various suggestions for a future TT that so far, I’m not quite happy with. So I’m returning to the mass of notes I have stored (and backed up!) for this week and a few more in the future – I have at least twelve future subjects on their way to completion – and this week, it’s literary connections. That is, songs that are about works of literature, reference them, or are about literary figures. I’d love to hear other suggestions, too. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 120: Literature”

Tuesday Ten: 107: Stuck on Repeat

When I first thought about it, this was inspired by a seemingly never-ending parade of bands who seem to have come up with nothing new themselves that I keep hearing. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 107: Stuck on Repeat”

Tuesday Ten: 082: Life In The City

This week, it’s time to revisit a list I’ve had partially completed for weeks. It’s all about life in the city. I love living in the city, and indeed have done so for much of my life. I love the bustle, the crowded streets, the fast pace of life, and the fact that there is also something to do, and something to keep you going. On the flipside, sometimes they can be a place to lose yourself in, as they have to me sometimes become the loneliest place of all. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 082: Life In The City”
