Countdown: 2016: Albums

Part three of the round-up of 2016 comes to you from the final week of our honeymoon (from the warm sunshine of the Dominican Republic). Sorry, not sorry. Read more “Countdown: 2016: Albums”

Tuesday Ten: 270: Tracks of the Month (August 2016)

Post-Infest, pre-Cold Waves, I’ve been hit by the usual late-summer/early-autumn rush of new music, with little time to process it all. For a start, then, there are thirteen tracks here rather than ten to ensure I cover more. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 270: Tracks of the Month (August 2016)”

Tuesday Ten: 253: Tracks of the Month (March 1996)

This is part two of my look back at 1996, where I continue what I started in Tuesday Ten: 250 by looking at releases that were broadly in February/March of that year.

Tuesday Ten: 252: Inappropriate Wedding Songs

It all started at one of the very first weddings we attended. Up in the hills west of Huddersfield, this wedding had an “alternative” soundtrack as befitted the bride and groom, and after a first dance of Velvet Revolver’s Fall To Pieces and a succession of amusingly – and we have no idea if unwittingly or not – inappropriate songs that culminated in Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart, we hatched a plan. Tuesday Ten: 192: Reader’s perfect albums

This week, my Tuesday Ten series goes in a new direction – as I’ve not written it. A few weeks ago, I posted an innocent post on Facebook asking my friends what they considered their perfect albums…and got an avalanche of suggestions. Over 100 comments and 150 suggested albums later, I thought it might be fun to ask a few of the contributors to expand on why they thought a particular album was perfect. Countdown: 2013: Albums

Part four of my 2013 rundown – and this was a difficult list to do. Very difficult. And for the first time in a number of years, it took until the last week to finally decide once and for all on the top five in particular. Read more “Countdown: 2013: Albums”

Tuesday Ten: 120: Literature

The wierd thing about writing these Tuesday Tens is that the ideas for some take a long time to come together. Others can have a whole load of suggestions come at once, particularly if an idea for a subject pops up while I’m in the pub, or out with my girlfriend (especially in the car, oddly enough), when a song triggers it. This happened on Friday night in the Dev, when Daisy and another friend came up with various suggestions for a future TT that so far, I’m not quite happy with. So I’m returning to the mass of notes I have stored (and backed up!) for this week and a few more in the future – I have at least twelve future subjects on their way to completion – and this week, it’s literary connections. That is, songs that are about works of literature, reference them, or are about literary figures. I’d love to hear other suggestions, too. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 120: Literature”

Countdown: 1990s: Tracks: 140-121

Tuesday Ten: 068: Religion

With it being Easter this weekend, I thought it perhaps apt that I turn to the subject of religion for this week’s TT. Although not unexpectedly, perhaps, with the music that I listen to, it proved somewhat difficult to find that many songs that cast religion in a positive light. Still, I did find the odd one to ensure some kind of balance, at least. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 068: Religion”

Countdown: 2008: Tracks

In these mp3-based times, this isn’t necessarily a collection of singles, more the best individual tracks I’ve heard this year (and were released in the last twelve months since last year’s list). Read more “Countdown: 2008: Tracks”
