Tuesday Ten: 279: Tracks of the Month (January 1997)

Over last year – to mark twenty years since I began writing about music – I ran a series of posts looking at the music I was buying and listening to in 1996 (and that was released that year), partly to jog my memory and partly to dig into my formative musical influences a bit, too. Tuesday Ten: 238: Dead on “TV”

This week, time for a Tuesday Ten I’ve been thinking about and working on, gradually, for a few months. I was set a challenge, you see: to come up with a Tuesday Ten where deaths occur “on camera” (i.e. are described or happen in the songs). However, I could not rely on some of the usual suspects – particularly Cave, Cash and Dylan. Some interesting suggestions were originally made, I thought of a few more, and then opened it up to my readers for some other ideas, and the result is the ten below. Tuesday Ten: 186: Television, the Drug of the Nation

Firstly, with apologies for the lack of content (comparatively) recently. Things have been rather chaotic in my life (far too many things from all sides) that have meant that a fair amount of writing for this site that I’ve had planned has either had to be delayed or shelved. As things – hopefully! – seem to be settling again now, let’s crank up the volume a bit. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 186: Television, the Drug of the Nation”

Tuesday Ten: 158: Concept Albums

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that over the years, there aren’t a great many times where I could honestly say that I haven’t rolled my eyes in response to any news that “[x] are releasing a concept album”. It is fair to suggest that Concept Albums really do have a shitty reputation, in the main, perhaps because some of the better known exponents over time managed to drag the idea through the mud, with certain dull, never-ending prog-rock epics being the worst offenders. And yes, I can’t stand Pink Floyd. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 158: Concept Albums”

Tuesday Ten: 149: B-Sides

In this era of downloads, the B-side has almost become a dead art. And what a shame, when you consider some of the astonishing tracks hidden away on the flipside of a single over the years. Not to mention that a number of B-sides have become accepted as some bands greatest songs, or have become live favourites, or both. Back when it was still of use, it was a good place for bands to experiment, or simply to continue releasing material without the pressure of a full album. Or in some cases, simply fill up B-side space with endless remixes, which may or may not have been any good. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 149: B-Sides”

Tuesday Ten: 120: Literature

The wierd thing about writing these Tuesday Tens is that the ideas for some take a long time to come together. Others can have a whole load of suggestions come at once, particularly if an idea for a subject pops up while I’m in the pub, or out with my girlfriend (especially in the car, oddly enough), when a song triggers it. This happened on Friday night in the Dev, when Daisy and another friend came up with various suggestions for a future TT that so far, I’m not quite happy with. So I’m returning to the mass of notes I have stored (and backed up!) for this week and a few more in the future – I have at least twelve future subjects on their way to completion – and this week, it’s literary connections. That is, songs that are about works of literature, reference them, or are about literary figures. I’d love to hear other suggestions, too. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 120: Literature”

Tuesday Ten: 018: Indie

It's time to delve into what is now some of the outer reaches of my music collection for this week's TT. Indeed, into a genre that I rarely buy anything from anymore – indie bands. And this one is in a slightly different format to usual, too – click on the Key Tracks links to find video links/track samples. Other suggestions for bands I may have missed welcome… Read more “Tuesday Ten: 018: Indie”
