Tuesday Ten: 178: The Bucket List

During my recent Depeche Mode live review, I noted that they were one of those bands that I’d been waiting a long, long time to see, and indeed, over the past few years, I’ve made considerable inroads into a long list of similar bands. Particular shows of note included Laibach at the Tate Modern last year, Kraftwerk in Düsseldorf in January, Faith No More at Hammersmith last July, Refused at the Forum last August, The Afghan Whigs at KOKO in August, and Godspeed You! Tuesday Ten: 137: Videos and 30 Years of MTV

Another bit of a retrospective this week, as I finally get ’round to covering the fact that MTV turned 30 years old on 01-August. As the NME noted a few months ago, whatever happened to the MTV of old? For all its faults – not least seemingly moving away from what was the whole point in the first place towards reality shows (which it started with The Real World) – MTV did drive the use of the music video. It pushed artists to produce ever more outlandish, expensive and perhaps ridiculously conceited concepts, but crucially also gave some bands exposure that they would never have otherwise had. But Listen: 104: Kidneythieves – trypt0fanatic

There has been a steady procession of reformations and/or long-awaited returns in the past couple of years, either bands returning for one last shot at success that perhaps eluded them in the first place, bands simply looking at making some (more) money on the back of previous success and a feeling of nostalgia, and then there are bands with perhaps less cynical reasons for reformation.
