Tuesday Ten: 273: Tracks of the Month (October 1996)

Onto part nine of my 1996 roundup. As a reminder, I’m marking twenty years of writing about music (my writing long pre-dates this website going live) across this year with a monthly look at ten releases from 1996, where possible in chronological order. 2013 in Review: Disappointments

Regular readers will be well used to this by now – at the end of each year, I round up my year in music over the course of successive weeks. This year there will be five posts, the dates of which are shown below. I’ve not had the time to write as many reviews as I’d like to have done this year (the second half of the year in particular has been horrendously busy and stressful), which means that perhaps I’ve not been able to do justice to what has been released or played this year. In addition, this is the tenth year of my end of year lists, so at some point I’ll be having a quick look back at what has topped the lists over the years. Tuesday Ten: 178: The Bucket List

During my recent Depeche Mode live review, I noted that they were one of those bands that I’d been waiting a long, long time to see, and indeed, over the past few years, I’ve made considerable inroads into a long list of similar bands. Particular shows of note included Laibach at the Tate Modern last year, Kraftwerk in Düsseldorf in January, Faith No More at Hammersmith last July, Refused at the Forum last August, The Afghan Whigs at KOKO in August, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor at the Forum in November. And that was only the best of them. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 178: The Bucket List”

Tuesday Ten: 174: Live Albums

So…I’ve looked at the best gigs, live venues, and gigs at the London Astoria, bands at Infest, bands I’ve *not* seen live…but I’ve never had a look at live albums, somehow, as my girlfriend pointed out last week. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 174: Live Albums”

Tuesday Ten: 173: Tracks of the Month (April 2013)

First post in a while, yep, been really busy again. On schedule, mind, here is this month’s ten tracks you should hear. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 173: Tracks of the Month (April 2013)”

Tuesday Ten: 133: 90s Dance

Yes, I’m still on something of a retro tip. After seeing a depressing “top selling dance songs of the noughties” list, I began thinking back to the stuff I loved in the nineties. I was, to be fair, heavily into big beat and drum and bass in my uni days, so this list might well be heavily skewed. But needless to say, there was far too much to squeeze into just ten songs, so this has spiralled into rather more than that. But, it all deserved mentioning, and as always, there are playlists to listen to them on. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 133: 90s Dance”

Tuesday Ten: 063: Robots

After last week saw the end of a lull in my Tuesday Ten postings, I’m hoping this month to actually do one each week. This week’s was inspired by the mention on Popjustice (complete with sample) of Röyksopp‘s forthcoming single The Girl and The Robot, which appears to be something of a rather brilliant pop song, and then there was the timely, but too late for me, showing of I’m a Cyborg, but That’s OK last night, a film I still haven’t seen. Tuesday Ten: 017: Videos

Often part of the appeal of a particular song is the music video – a medium that has now been evolving in ever more complicated ways for over thirty years. Often, though, it isn’t always the really technically advanced – and expensive – videos that are the best. Sometimes all it takes is some lateral thinking and a great video will come out of not too much. Read more “Tuesday Ten: 017: Videos”
