Welcome to the Future: 051: Events, gigs and new release round-up 03-August 2018

Another Friday, another round-up. As always this is a look at upcoming releases, relevant music news and upcoming events and gigs worth spending some of your time at. It is by no means an exhaustive list, and I’m always on the lookout for more to include.

transmission – the amodelofcontrol.com podcast – has resumed the run through of the a-z of industrial, with all episodes here. The latest episode was released this week (transmission: 011), and transmission: 012 will be out before Infest.

You can also get it via RSS, on iTunes, on Stitcher, and is also now available on the new Google Podcasts App (search “amodelofcontrol”).

In a bit of a departure from my previous work, I’ll be presenting at Nine Worlds next week, looking at the links between various areas of relevant “geek culture” and music. If you’re going to be there, expect some unexpected music and discussion: I’m talking on Friday 10-Aug, at 1515.

If you want to submit anything to be included here? E-mail me (You know what to do with that to make it work, right?), comment/message on Facebook at the amodelofcontrol.com page, and over on Twitter (@amodelofcontrol).

New and Upcoming Releases this week

There are various new and recent releases to catch up with.

Two out today are interesting ones – the final Swans album of their first era – Soundtracks For The Blind is re-issued today, and Kælan Mikla’s intended first album Mánadans gets it’s first release after never actually having been available before.

Released earlier this week was the third album from Keith Top Of The Pops & His Minor UK Indie Celebrity All-Star Backing Band – the marvellously titled Livin The Dream, while an expanded version of Cyanotic’s Tech Noir has been released in conjunction with Armalyte as T2.

Then in addition to all that, Otep are back with Kult 45, and Statiqbloom are releasing new EP Infinite Spectre.

There are a whole host of upcoming releases to mention, too. Ashbury Heights return with The Victorian Wallflowers on 31-Aug, while the new Solitary Experiments single Crash and Burn is out next week, with album Future Tense coming soon after. Then, the excellent ADULT. release This Behaviour on 07-Sep through DAIS, while Groovie Mann of The Thrill Kill Kult’s new project Trash Deity releases Cross & Divide also on 07-Sep, through Metropolis.

Then, announced yesterday, Polish metal titans Behemoth return with new album I Loved You At Your Darkest on 05-October (finally!). The video for the impressive new single God = Dog is out now, and there is a hefty European tour in the new year.

It also appears that Aphex Twin is back, judging on the mysterious artwork beginning to appear

Finally, Alex Reed of Seeming and Thou Shalt Not has a Patreon, that you should go check out.

Other Things

One intriguing talk at Foyles next week: David Stubbs and Stephen Mallinder discuss electronic music and it’s rapid evolution from the 80s and onward, in connection with David Stubbs’ new book Mars by 1980: The Story of Electronic Music.

A few things worth reading: Sara from Youth Code on Marilyn Manson’s debut, the NME published Amy Lamé’s reponse as London’s Night Czar to the recent changes in Hackney around licensing, some interesting comment on the trend towards “cashless” festivals (seriously folks, just accept contactless, don’t make us move to “your” set-up), and a piece about Peter Steele and why many still love him after death, despite his flaws.

Finally, new research appears to confirm that streaming is at last supplanting “illegal” downloading. Now, if only streaming services would pay artists properly…
