Welcome to the Future: 007: Music news round-up 11-August 2017

Here we are with week two of my musical round-up. As I explained last week, this will be a weekly post on a Friday that will wrap up relevant new releases that week, newly announced releases coming in the near future, newly announced gigs of note, and also upcoming gigs/clubs over the next few weeks – as well as the odd bit of music news that is otherwise worth reading.

Welcome to the Future: 006

I used to do something similar on Livejournal back in the day, and I’ve only recently decided to return to doing so after a few requests. A note: I carry no advertising on amodelofcontrol.com as a point of principle, and only link to retail sites in any form as offering a method of purchasing music in one way or another.

If you want to submit anything to be included here? E-mail me (You know what to do with that to make it work, right?), comment/message on Facebook at the amodelofcontrol.com page, and over on Twitter (@amodelofcontrol).

New Releases this week

A number of the releases listed here are available to listen and stream on Bandcamp.

The Sheffield industrial act Randolph & Mortimer returned this week with new EP Hope Tragedy Myths, with the band noting that all profits from this release in the first four weeks “go to Vida Sheffield, a voluntary organisation that helps victims of domestic and sexual abuse and violence“.

As I mentioned last week, Matt Hart releases his first EP Chaos Rising today, which is very much a product of his influences while DJing. So expect a solid mix of danceable industrial and industrial metal.

Until I saw I Die: You Die mention it earlier in the week, I’d totally missed that Azar Swan have returned with their first new material in a while, with the The Golden Age of Hate EP. Presumably an album is coming too.

Oneohtrixpointnever‘s new album is the Good Time soundtrack, and I like what I’ve heard so far (particularly the exceptional collaboration with Iggy Pop).

One release this week I’d only have heard thanks to 6Music, frankly, is the new album from Downtown Boys (Cost of Living). Produced by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi), this is searing political hardcore that’s actually fun to listen to.

Paul Draper (formerly of much-loved UK indie band Mansun finally releases his debut solo album Spooky Action. He is touring in September, although I believe most dates are now sold-out.

Other release coming soon

Concrete Lung confirmed this week that a new album entitled FUMES is due later this year on their long-time label Armalyte Industries.

Following Ben Frost’s surprise new EP last week, there’s an album coming at the end of September, too.
Will Haven have posted a teaser for forthcoming new album Muerte, which is out next month, while interesting punk-industrial act Street Sects release a new EP Rat Jacket on 06-October. In addition, Black Metal titans Watain release a new album in January.

In compilation and re-issue news, Dependence 2017: Next-Level Electronics is out in September, and Electronic Body Matrix 2 follows in October. While P•A•L’s classic signum is being re-issued on vinyl and digitally.

In fitting-tribute-to-Lemmy news

Museum curator Lorna Steel, who worked on the study, suggested the crocodile should be named after her late musical hero. ‘Although Lemmy passed away at the end of 2015,’ she says, ‘we’d like to think that he would have raised a glass to Lemmysuchus, one of the nastiest sea creatures to have ever inhabited the Earth.’

Oh, and Thor Harris, ex-Swans, is running for Governor of Texas:

Standing in front of a rainbow flag, he explained his reasoning. “Howdy, my name’s Thor Harris, and I’m running for governor of Texas, ’cause fuck this.” When asked if he’s really planning to run, Harris responded to Pitchfork, “Why the fuck not?”
