Countdown: 2006: Gigs

So, following yesterday’s best albums of the year…here are my picks for the best live gigs I have seen this year.

Live at Sheffield Leadmill 03-Mar-06

They were in here last year, yes, but when they remain this good…quite possibly the most staggeringly intense live band I have ever seen. If the live version of Holes doesn’t move you, you have no soul.

Number_04The Dresden Dolls
Live at Sheffield Leadmill 07-May-06

In parts a theatrical experience, never mind a gig, this was some show. A mix of original stuff – old and new – and some quite extraordinary covers, it was spellbinding from start to finish. And it never ceases to amaze me just how much noise just two people on stage can make. A mention also for the support act De’Votchka, who were almost as good themselves!

Number_03The Twilight Singers with Mark Lanegan
Live at Sheffield Boardwalk 24-Aug-06

A rare chance to see two of my grunge heroes sharing a stage, with Greg Dulli treating us to a mix of his current band’s stuff and a few Afghan Whigs classics, and then Mark Lanegan bringing his own darkness and a few of his own songs. The only quibble? They weren’t onstage longer…

Number_02Stromkern
Live at Infest 27-Aug-06

Here was a band that the latest album Light It Up and a few singles apart, I had never paid all that much attention to previously. All this has changed since this gig, where they made themselves heard thanks to an astonishing, high-tempo live set, with various songs from their back catalogue being given a supercharged sheen.

Number_01Front Line Assembly
Live at Infest 27-Aug-06

10 years of waiting for this was worth all the wait, and probably more. After the release of their best album in years over the summer, anticipation had been heightened yet more for this, and they didn’t disappoint. Bill Leeb and the band raced through a “best of” set with more energy than many bands half their age. After a few years of being almost a forgotten band to many, they are back in style. I’m hoping on less than 10 years to wait for next time, though…!
