Countdown: 2015: Gigs

2015 in gigs: 70 days, 165 live sets, 154 unique bands, forty venues, seven cities, four festivals (and each of those festivals in a different town/city), three countries, two continents. Read more “Countdown: 2015: Gigs”

Countdown: 2015: Albums

This week, on part three, I turn my attention to the best albums of the year. I seem to say it every year, but really – 2015 has been an extraordinary year for alternative music, you’ve just got to have been looking in the right places to find some of it. Not all of it has been what you might expect – one of the most interesting trends of late has been some cross-pollination of genres that is really resulting in some extraordinary music. Countdown: 2014: Gigs

This year: 170 bands, 57 days-worth of gigs. Five festivals, three countries, eight cities/towns. From venues holding thousands to those holding tens. Due to personal issues and, frankly, being too damned busy for much of the year, I didn’t get to write about many of them aside from the festivals, so writing this list has really taxed the powers of my memory. Countdown: 2014: Albums

Week three of the amodelofcontrol.com roundup of 2014, and this is, I guess, the big one. The albums of the year. Read more “Countdown: 2014: Albums”

Countdown: 2014: Tracks

Here we go, then, with the run-down of the best tracks of 2014 – according to me, anyway. 2014 has been an odd year, as friends will know – life has rather got in the way in a number of respects, which has cut down the amount of writing I’ve been able to do, but that hasn’t stopped me buying and enjoying music. Countdown: 2014: Compilations and re-issues

Finally into December, and I can start the process of seeing the back of 2014. But before it does end, here on amodelofcontrol.com it is time to run down the year in music, with the usual four Tuesday posts that begin with the year’s best compilations and reissues, then onto the best tracks of the year next week, the best albums after that, then finally the best gigs of the year. Countdown: 1980s: Tracks: 20-01

A couple of years ago, I posted the best of the 90s, and the best of the 00s, from my point of view. Read more “Countdown: 1980s: Tracks: 20-01”

Countdown: 1980s: Tracks: 60-41

I actually started this 80s rundown a couple of years back, but life and other things have rather got in the way. So, a little bit of spare time has allowed me to get this finished. Without further ado, then, let’s get on with it. Read more “Countdown: 1980s: Tracks: 60-41”

Countdown: 2013: Gigs

After last year’s exhausting run of gigs, 2013 was even crazier. I saw 66 days of gigs – seeing nearly 160 live sets in the process, in three countries, six different cities and and including three festivals. What was interesting, though, was that maybe I hit saturation point this year. While there were a handful of truly extraordinary shows, there were quite a lot of shows that were just ok, and then quite a few more – particularly support acts – that really weren’t up to much at all. But the one thing that was easy? The best of the lot, which was decided on the spot, back in January… Read more “Countdown: 2013: Gigs”

Countdown: 2013: Albums

Part four of my 2013 rundown – and this was a difficult list to do. Very difficult. And for the first time in a number of years, it took until the last week to finally decide once and for all on the top five in particular. Read more “Countdown: 2013: Albums”

Countdown: 2013: Compilations and reissues

I have something of a love-hate relationship with the whole idea of reissues and compilations. Some are truly worthwhile – reminding listeners of bands that they may have otherwise missed, or introducing them to something wholly new. Others, however, reek of shameless cash-in. I’ve ignored the latter here, and gone for those that were released in 2013 that are absolutely worth your time. Read more “Countdown: 2013: Compilations and reissues”

2013 in Review: Disappointments

Regular readers will be well used to this by now – at the end of each year, I round up my year in music over the course of successive weeks. This year there will be five posts, the dates of which are shown below. I’ve not had the time to write as many reviews as I’d like to have done this year (the second half of the year in particular has been horrendously busy and stressful), which means that perhaps I’ve not been able to do justice to what has been released or played this year. In addition, this is the tenth year of my end of year lists, so at some point I’ll be having a quick look back at what has topped the lists over the years. Read more “2013 in Review: Disappointments”
